Weekly Update: 7/10

Hello everyone, happy Saturday!

Hope everyone had a good week. Mine was shorter than usual since I had Monday off, but that really only ever seems to make things busier those last four days. Doesn’t help that summer is in full swing now and I’ve never been much of one for the heat. Still, some of my most productive writing hours were during the summer in the past, so I hope to use that to my advantage as I hide away in my air conditioned study to write.

But I digress.

Anyway, progress on writing has been made on TFT chapter 3 this week, but I’m holding off on adjusting the exact percentage on the front page of my site. This is mostly due to the fact I’m not currently certain how much progress was made. The exact length of chapter 3 has fluctuated more than I care to admit the last few weeks, if only because much of it is dependent on how much time I want to spend describing things.

I’m also not certain how much exposition and descriptions I want to drop in this chapter, which will also affect the length. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of writers who spend multiple pages describing people or places. There are those that can do it well, like Robert Jordan, but I always feel time would be better spent learning about the characters themselves or progressing the plot.

I will not deny, however, the value in taking time to chew the scenery or create a striking visual in the mind’s eye at certain points in a story. Chapter 3 happens to be one of those times best served by more description, but I’ll be trying to strike a balance so no one gets bored.

At this time, all I can say is that it’s probably going to be somewhere between 20 and 30 pages. I’m at 14 pages now, and writing the first draft is always the longer part in my writing process, so we shall see where we are at next week.

I haven’t written much for the character introductions yet, but those generally take more time in preparation than writing. So I expect progress to be swift once I get the ball rolling.

And that’s all I have for now. Have a great weekend everyone!
