Writing Itch

Hey folks, happy Saturday!

Hope yall are doing well, I’m still currently getting those competition entries put together, but I think I’ll be done in the next couple days.

So, while I don’t have anything exciting to share, I figured I’d briefly write about something else. Something about me and my approach to writing.

I’m not sure if other writers experience this phenomenon, but whenever I try to look for new stories to experience, I get this weird itch. This sensation that propels me to delve as deep as I can in a particular type of story until I’m satisfied. Its led me to a number of bizarre or at least niche stories that I’ve come to appreciate over the years. However, there are often times that itch cannot be sated. It just gnaws at the back of my mind as I keep digging deeper and deeper through a genre or style of storytelling.

This continues until I reach a breaking point. A point of absolute frustration. It is at this moment I realize that whatever I seek might not exist, or at least I am not capable of finding it. This frustration, then, can only be subsided once I’ve a clear decision.

If I cannot find it, I must write it.

Several story ideas I have on laid out under the Ideas section of my site found their birth in this supposed frustration.

Others, came from the frustrations of a story that came so close to scratching the itch that it left me feeling even worse. As, like an itch or any other minor discomfort, it becomes unbearable when you believe you have found relief only to discover you are no where close to it.

I bring this up because I find it an interesting motivation.

I’ve read several different books or articles on the topic of the writing process, and often they speak on finding your vision in a positive. Stories or concepts you love can fuel a great many stories, after all.

While I’ve certainly done that before, TFT an obvious example, I find that vexation is often an equally valuable well of emotion to draw from.

Because that vexation is because the world lacks something, and you feel this stronger than most in that moment. Who better to fill in that void than one who so clearly feels it?

I feel this applies to other works of art as well, but as I am a writer I’ll stick with my own field here for study.

I also feel this applies to more than those who are desirous of professional writing careers. Anyone, so long as they feel that same need, should try their hand at filling the void. Some great works of art have from fans who loved something but felt it lacked in a single aspect. You never know, you might write something great.

And if not, at the very least, you’ll find that itch is long gone by the time you’re done!

Anyway, that’s all I have for now. Hope you enjoyed the little random blurb here and have a nice weekend!
